Japan Day 2: First Half

Our second day in Japan started off with a walking tour of Kyoto! We packed up all of our stuff, loaded up the bus and then headed out for a tour that was lead by George Hlawatsch, a professor at Kansai Gaidai University.

Cute corgie!

First stop: Sanjusangendo, a huge temple.

Inside the temple are over 1,000 Buddhist statues, each with 40 or so arms. The original temple that was built  burned down in 1249 and a new one was built in 1266. That building is still standing today.

Pretty orange gates.

Nature.

I love these orange gates! What a pop of color!

Professor showing us a really old history book he owns. It was pretty darn legit.

Doors.

We weren't allowed to take any pictures inside, but here are some pictures from Google to give you an idea of just how amazing this place is.

And the walking tour continued...

There are thousands of Korean ears and nose buried under there back from the Imjin War! Pretty gross.

Temples abound! This one was built by Toyotomi Hideyoshi.

Hello Kitty.

Gates.

Just keep walking, just keep walking...

Up a side street.

Cute little box van.

There are 2 theories about why wood was placed like this in front of houses.  1: to keep dogs from peeing on your house, and 2: to keep homeless people from using your roof as shelter. I like the peeing dog theory.

It was then off to a Buddhist cemetery.

This little kitty kept meowing. He sounded sad. :(

Women only have one leg?

Second half of the day coming next!
